Borrow the Trait A field guide to useful behavior

About the project

Borrow a trait.
Keep the life attached.

Borrow the Trait looks at things people do well, then asks what those behaviors depended on—and what might be worth trying at a smaller scale.

01 / ORIGIN

From role models to useful behavior

The project first took shape under the working name A Role Model a Day. The name put the spotlight on the person. The more useful question turned out to be what someone actually did—and whether another person could learn from it without treating an exceptional life as a recipe.

So the focus shifted: less hero worship, more careful borrowing. One trait, its mechanism, the conditions around it, and a fitting experiment for the reader.

02 / APPROACH

Keep the context in view

Good stories about achievement can hide the help, collaborators, preparation, luck, power, and cost that made action possible. We try to put those back in the frame. Agency matters, but it is not the same as controlling everything.

That also means a lesson may not fit your situation. “Try this” should be a modest invitation, not a verdict about what you ought to manage or overcome.

03 / MAKING

Research, interpretation, a human editor

Each profile draws on sources, and the site shows them so you can follow the trail. The behavior we highlight and the practice we suggest are editorial interpretations—not claims that a single trait explains a person's success or will work for everyone.

Borrow the Trait is a Kentaur Verk project. Tools, including AI, can help search, compare, and organize material. People still have to read, judge what matters, and stand behind what gets published.
